Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, Hydrafill and Evolence are all examples of a type of non-surgical injectable treatment known as dermal fillers. They can be used to fill up lines and skin folds (such as “smile lines”), soften wrinkles, improve facial contour, or enhance your lips to give them a fuller and more sensuous appearance.

Restylane

Restylane was the first dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid (a naturally-occurring substance found in our body) to be approved by the FDA in the United States of America in December 2003. Since then it has been used on more than 1 million patients worldwide, and so its track record and safety profile is probably the most extensive among all the newer dermal fillers.

Because hyaluronic acid is structurally the same between human and animal species, there is no need for allergy and skin testing when receiving Restylane injections. Restylane typically lasts between 6 to 12 months (8-9 months on average) depending on the formulation and the area injected.

Juvederm

Juvederm is one of the newest hyaluronic-acid-based dermal fillers which is FDA-approved in the USA in June 2006 for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. For some time now the product has been marketed in the United Kingdom as Hydrafill or SoftLine.

In our experience, Juvederm injects smoother than Restylane, and some patients claim that the result feels slightly more natural. Juvederm can last between 6 to 12 months as well.

Evolence

Evolence is the latest dermal filler to hit the UK market. It is made of natural collagen, one of the most prevalent materials in your body. No allergic responses have been reported in clinical trials, nor in post-launch surveillance studies, so no skin allergy testing is needed.

Because Evolence is a collagen, it offers the added benefit that it stimulates the clotting cascade, possibly resulting in less bleeding and bruising upon injection. Evolence has been approved by the FDA for treatment of facial wrinkles and skin folds… its cosmetic effect lasting between 6 and 12 months.

What To Do Next

If you’re interested in smoothing out unwanted skin folds (e.g. “smile lines”) or enhancing your lips with dermal filler injections that are expertly performed by our accredited, skilled and experienced cosmetic doctors at iKon Clinic, please call 01925 730 130 for your free no-obligation consultation. Our doctors can carry out the dermal filler injections at the same time as the consultation should you decide to go ahead with the treatment.

Sculptra is a lesser-known (compared to other non-surgical treatments that receive more coverage in the press) yet safe and scientifically proven injectable treatment which restores facial volume lost to the process of ageing.

Unlike other dermal fillers, Sculptra actually works by stimulating your very own skin cells to produce more collagen. The result is a fuller, smoother, younger-looking face that looks entirely natural (as opposed to the “pulled” or “done” look associated with traditional facial cosmetic surgery).

How Sculptra Works

Dissolution of fat on the face contributes to significant changes in appearances and may result as a consequence of hereditary syndromes, disease or aging. In natural ageing, it happens as a part of a constellation that includes loss of elasticity, collagen breakdown and reabsorption of bone. This sunken appearance due to loss of facial volume causes excess skin.

Trying to correct by tightening the skin without addressing volume replacement results in a skeletonised and scrawny appearance. Volume replacement has been addressed by a wide variety of naturally-occurring (collagen, fat, hyaluronic acid) and synthetic (acrylates, silicone and other polymers) fillers, both permanent and biodegradable (meaning that the body can break them down). Sculptra is a fresh type of injectable treatment whose ‘bulking effect’ is dependent on host response.

Injectable Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), the main ingredient of Sculptra, is a reabsorbable, biocompatible polymer that stimulates an intended inflammatory response to foreign body, regeneration of skin cells and a slow-paced metabolic breakdown of the polymer material.

Sculptra received FDA approval in 2004 for the remedy of HIV-mediated facial lipoatrophy. It is inserted by injection into the subcutis and triggers skin cell replication. A number of injections are required, but the cosmetic results for hollow cheeks have been nothing less than impressive. In the European clinical trials, the result lasted for about 2 to 3 years.

Our skilled and experienced cosmetic doctors will inject Sculptra into the right area. If it’s injected into the wrong area (for example the dermis) by other less experienced practitioners, the risk of lump formations will increase.

What To Do Next

If you’re interested in restoring your facial volume gradually and naturally with Sculptra injectable treatments that are expertly performed by our accredited, skilled and experienced cosmetic doctors at iKon Clinic, please call 01925 730 130 for your free no-obligation consultation.

Botox is a safe and medically proven non-surgical treatment that can soften the wrinkles on your forehead, between your eyebrows and around your eyes. It does so by relaxing the facial muscles which cause the wrinkles in the first place. Here we’ll explain the step-by-step process of how the accredited and experienced doctors at iKon Cosmetic Clinic carry out Botox treatments.

Botox Injections: Step-By-Step

Botox generally comes in vials of 100 units each, that can be left in a refrigarator at a temperature of between two and eight degrees Celcius for as long as 2 years.

Prior to administering the injection of Botox, our doctors will mix the Botox with clean salt water, leading to a formulation of 4 units Botox per 0.1 mL of salt water. Our doctors will also double-check the expiration date on the vial, and that the formulated Botox is clear, colourless, odourless and free of particles before you get the Botox injection.

Once the vial has been opened and mixed, our doctors will keep the Botox in a refrigerator at a temperature of between two and eight degrees Celcius, and administered within 4 hours. Any solution that remains will be discarded carefully as medical waste and NOT shared.

To start the injection, our doctors will use a clean syringe to extract at least 0.5 mL of the well reconstituted toxin, and expel any residual air bubbles in the barrel. The used needle is then removed and a new one affixed to administer the injection.

Our doctors will then get you to make a number of face expressions including frowning, smiling and raising your eyebrows. Via these the activity of the facial muscles can be determined to decide on an effective dose and the injection points.

To reduce the possibility of ptosis, our doctor will make sure that the injected volume is correct, and that the Botox is not injected closer than 1 centimetre above the central eyebrow, or near the upper eyelid.

The whole routine takes between ten and thirty minutes. The Botox injection will start to take effect after 1 or 2 days, reaching highest effect after 1 week. The resulting improvement will hold from three to six months before another course is necessary.

Someone who doesn’t have an inkling of what to do in the very unlikely event that things go wrong?

That’s why when you receive your non-surgical cosmetic treatment at iKon Clinic, you can rest assured that both the consultation and the procedure WILL be carried out by a doctor who’s not only fully trained, qualified and accredited in the UK, but also skilled and experienced in performing cosmetic treatments.

Our cosmetic doctor will make sure that you experience the least pain possible when receiving your non-surgical treatment. Unlike nurses, doctors are legally allowed to prescribe and administer nerve blocks, sedation and strong painkillers if required.

Our medical director, Dr Martin S.Y. Ooi, was one of the top students in his class at Ninewells Medical School UK, graduating MBChB with Commendation. Having been involved in the medical profession for twelve years (including cosmetic medicine training in Harley Street, London), he is well-qualified and vastly experienced in the realm of cosmetic medicine. He is fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC No. 6031342) and is a member of the following professional bodies: British Association of Cosmetic Doctors, British Medical Laser Association, American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine and the International Academy of Cosmetic Dermatology.
